Some fantasy books feel like they’re trying really hard to prove how big and important they are. Massive lore dumps. Endless action. Characters giving speeches every few pages. The Valley of The Shadows honestly feels quieter than that, and weirdly, that’s what makes it hit harder. The book follows Aki moving through this place called the Shadows, and the whole world feels off in a way that’s difficult to explain properly. Fog everywhere. Silence that feels uncomfortable. Memories slipping around in his head like he can’t fully hold onto them. Nothing ever feels stable for long. Even peaceful moments feel temporary. And honestly, Aki feels exhausted from the beginning. Not a dramatic movie exhausted either. Just…drained. Mentally tired. The kind where even thinking becomes work after a while. That part felt very real while reading it because the story doesn’t pretend he’s some fearless hero all the time. Half the journey feels like him trying to stop himself from emotionally shutting down completely.
